I never tried the DT-990's but wound up buying DT-880's after trying the DT-770's and a couple of AudioTechnica's (i don't remember which ones). The DT-880's like the other poster said seemed the most balanced. I've been quite pleased. The DT-770's has a bass bump and were fun to listen to but I couldn't trust them for checking my mixes. The 32 ohm model of the DT 770 Pro comes with "pleather" ear pads, so that's worth looking into. I'm not sure if you can buy the pads separately, though. I believe the Brainwavz HM5 pleather pads will fit the DT770s. They are very comfortable, receive a lot of praise, and completely cover the ears, unlike the M50 pads. Sound wise though, like u/AMindOfMetalAndFeels mentioned, one is closed back, the other is open, and the driver types are totally different, so it's a hard comparison to make. The DT990 will probably sound overall better but it's hard to say, I personally LOVE the sound planars produce, but it's not for everyone. Excellent-Expert-927. Both Beyerdynamic models are great headphones for neutral sound, but are designed with different environments in mind. For live monitoring or mixing, the DT 1770 don’t leak as much as the DT 1990, thanks to their closed-back design, and they can block a portion of background noise so that you can focus on your audio. Beyerdynamic DT 990 Pro Measurements. Let's start with frequency response of DT 990 and comparison to our preference target: We have some serious issues here. The headphone is tuned to produce its max bass output at around 150 Hz below which it drops rapidly. Inverse is in play above 2 kHz where we way overshoot. Beyerdynamic DT 770 PRO-80 ohm (Massdrop) Mitchell & Johnson GL2 Sennheiser HD380 PRO Sennheiser HD6XX (Massdrop) Any comments about preference between Beyerdynamic DT990 Premium or Hifiman HE4XX Planar Magnetic would be much appreciated. Thank you. Biggest difference would be the closed vs. open back design. Open backs are awesome where convenience allows for it. Personally, I use open backs (HD6xx) when alone in my room, mostly for either casual or critical listening. I tend to use closed backs (DT 770) when commuting, at work and on the occasion I want to block out external noises. Always buy headphones for music first and games second. 880 is my pick. Less treble than the 990 therefore less fatiguing, better mids. 990 would be better for editing though. Edit* reading more into your post, save up for the dt1990. It's a different beast altogether, smoother and more versatile. 9kGmx43.
